How to Get the Wrinkles Out of Your Rug

Gulnur Gundogan |

Imagine unrolling your nice area rug. It’s covered in wrinkles like it had a rough night. You smooth it out, feel proud… and the next morning, the creases are back like a bad habit.
If you’ve already tried stacking books, flipping it over, or just glaring at it in silent disappointment, it’s time for a real fix. This step-by-step guide will show you how to get wrinkles out of your rug for good.

Why Do Rugs Get Wrinkled?

Before we jump into solutions, it helps to know why your rug looks wavy or bumpy in the first place.
How wrinkled your rug is can depend on how it was delivered, whether it was folded or rolled. Rugs shipped folded are more likely to develop deep creases, while rolled rugs may have softer curves that flatten faster.

Other common causes include:

  • Storage or shipping creases: Tight rolls or folds can leave pressure lines in the rug fibers.
  • Material memory: Synthetic fibers “remember” shapes until heat or moisture resets them.
  • Uneven furniture weight: Heavy furniture on rug corners or edges can pull the rug out of shape.
  • Carpet-on-carpet setup: Rugs placed over soft surfaces shift and bunch easily.

Understanding the cause helps you pick the best fix.

  1. Reverse Roll It

Start with the simplest trick: reverse rolling. Roll your rug tightly in the opposite direction of the wrinkle and leave it like that for 24 hours.

This resets the fiber’s “memory” and releases built-up tension, it’s like yoga for your rug. If your rug was kept rolled or folded, this step by itself can already help a lot.

  2. Steam It

A steamer is your best friend here. Use a handheld steamer or a garment steamer on the underside of the rug.

The gentle heat relaxes the fibers so they can lie flat again.

If steaming from the top, place a thin cloth between the steamer and the rug to protect the material. Synthetic fibers, especially, don’t love direct heat.

  3. Put Ice on the Corners

It sounds odd, but it works.

Place an ice cube (or two) on the creased corners and let them melt completely. As the fibers absorb the moisture, they’ll expand slightly and relax as they dry.

Once dry, smooth it out with your hand or a flat object. It’s a slow but surprisingly effective trick.

  4. Iron Carefully

If steaming didn’t fully do the job, you can use an iron, but do it carefully.

Set the iron on a low heat setting and place a towel or cloth over the wrinkled area before ironing. Never touch the rug directly with the iron.

Move slowly and gently. The goal is simply to warm up the fibers so they relax, not to press them down super hard.

  5. Sun Method

Take advantage of a sunny day.

Lay your rug flat outside for a few hours. The natural warmth and light help loosen creases, and fresh air gives it a clean, revived feel.

Keep it out of direct, harsh sun for too long, though, especially if it’s a bright or delicate pattern, to avoid fading.

I’m confident that once you use these tricks, your rugs will finally lie flat perfectly. No more ripples, bumps, or daily frustration: just smooth floors and perfectly relaxed area rugs. And if you’re a visual person, here’s our step-by-step video guide to walk you through it.
