Rug Size Guide

Choosing the right size rug can be challenging. You'll need to decide where you want to place the rug and make sure that there's enough space around the perimeter of the rug so that it doesn't look overly crowded. To help you choose the perfect size rug for your space, we've put together a simple rug size guide.

Use the guidelines illustrated below to find the right size rug for every room in your home.

Living Room Rugs

3'x5'

A beautiful accent to a landing zone in a living room would be a 3'x5' rug. If you want to float the rug in the middle of your sitting area, beneath the coffee table, select a smaller rug than the sofa. We usually advise that all legs on top of the rug be placed towards its center.

5'x7'

A 5'x7' rug is usually large enough to accommodate a small seating area with two chairs and a sofa. We recommend that the front legs of your furniture be on the rug to avoid it seeming as if it's floating. If you want to visually enlarge a small living area, choose lighter rug colors.

8'x10'

An 8'x10' rug is large enough to accommodate most living room seating configurations. To achieve a cozy intimacy,place all legs of your sofa and chairs on the rug, or you may choose to place only the front legs on the rug with the back legs off to create a more open feel.

9'x12'

For larger living rooms, a 9'x12' rug will accommodate most living room furniture. All legs of the sofa and chairs should be placed on a rug this size. If you have even more space, try 10' x 14' or an extra large rug. Oversize rugs make a strong design statement and pull together your decor.

Dining Room Rugs

Round Table

Looking for a rug to fit beneath a round dining table?. Selecting a round rug is a great look and is a good choice when space is tight. To select the correct round rug size, add three to four feet to each side of your table's measurements. For a fourtop table, a rug that is 6' or 8' round is ideal.

Small Table

For a small square or rectangular dining table that seats four, a 5'x8' or 6'x9' rectangular rug is an excellent choice. Measure your table and allow enough room for four diners to sit comfortably with room to spare for the chair legs to remain on the rug when pulled out from the table.

Medium Table

The ideal size for a table for 6 is an 8'x10' rug. This size allows you to move the dining chairs around with all legs remaining on the rug. An 8x10 rug beneath a six-person dining table can make your dining room feel inviting. This works for both rectangular and oval tables.

Large Table

A table for 8 or more chairs looks best on a 9'x12' rug, providing adequate space for all of the chairs to be fully on the rug For a more dramatic look. Select a 10'x14' rug that will cover most of the floor. A good design rule of thumb is to leave at least one foot of flooring exposed around your rug.

Bedroom Rugs

1 Twin Bed

Create an elegant, cozy feel by placing a 5'x8' or 6'x9' rug beneath a twin bed. With this design, the nightstands are not on the rug. You can also place two 3'x5' rugs on either side of the twin bed for a similar look.

2 Twin Beds

Place the two twin beds on an 8'x10' or 9'x12' rug to completely cover the room and create a dramatic look. An affordable alternative would be to place a 3'x5' rug between the beds and a 2'x7' or 2'x10' runner rug horizontally across the front.

Full Bed

A full bed looks best with a 6'x9' or 8'x10' rug beneath. You can also use two 3'x5' rugs on each side of the bed to fill the space and give it a warm feel.

Queen Bed

The standard size for a queen bed is 60'x80'. A 6'x9' or 8'x10' rug looks great beneath a queen bed, the latter covering more of the flooring beneath the bed and nightstands. Depending on your room size, you may also achieve this full coverage look by selecting a 9'x12' or larger rug. You can also use two 2'x6' runner rugs on each side of the bed for a luxurious feel that’s a bit more budget friendly.

King Bed

A king-sized bed will require a 9'x12' rug. The rug should be placed under the bed, leaving the nightstands and rear legs of the bed off. This arrangement softens the corners of a standard or California king bed. If you have extra room, a 10'x14' rug might make your bedroom more dramatic covering most of the bedroom floor area For a more affordable options, frame your king bed or California king bed with 2'x7' runners along the sides.

Kitchen Rugs

Large Kitchens

In a large kitchen, you have plenty of options for rug size and placement. A 5'x8' or 6'x9' rug is often ideal. For a larger space, try an 8'x10' or 9'x12' rug.

Medium Kitchens

If your kitchen has an island, you can also place a rug in front of it. A 3'x5' or 4'x6' rug is usually the best size for an island. You can also use a runner in a kitchen, especially if you have an L-shaped space.

Small Kitchens

In a small kitchen, you'll want to be careful not to make the space feel too cluttered. A 2'x3' or 3'x5' washable rug is usually the best size for a small kitchen. Placement is usually in front of the sink.

Galley Kitchens

If you have a long and narrow kitchen (Galley style), a runner is the best way to go. A 2'x6' or 2'x9' rug will protect your floors and add a bit of style to the space. And remember that washable rugs are always great choices for messy kitchens.

Bathroom Rugs

Small Bathrooms

A 2'x3' or 3'x5' rug is usually the best size for a small bathroom or powder room. Use a small rug in front of the sink to complete the look.

Medium - Large Bathrooms

You can place two 2'x3' small rugs or a single runner rug in front of the sink for double vanity bathrooms. If your bathroom is larger, you can also use 3'x5', 4'x6', or even 5'x8' rugs as well as round, oval and square rugs.

Small Outdoor Space

For smaller outdoor arrangements, a medium-sized rug like a 3'x5' or 4'x6' is the perfect way to add a touch of style and comfort. These sizes are also great for anchoring smaller outdoor furniture pieces. A runner rug is also a great option for narrow and long outdoor spaces.

Medium - Large Outdoor Space

A 5'x7', 6'x9', or even an 8'x10' rug is a great way to anchor a large outdoor dining table or create an intimate outdoor seating area. These sizes are also great for more spacious patios, decks, or balconies.
