Living Room Rug Size Guide

A beautiful accent to a landing zone in a living room would be a 3'x5' rug. If you want to float the rug in the middle of your sitting area, beneath the coffee table, select a smaller rug than the sofa. We usually advise that all legs on top of the rug be placed towards its center.

A 5'x7' rug is usually large enough to accommodate a small seating area with two chairs and a sofa. We recommend that the front legs of your furniture be on the rug to avoid it seeming as if it's floating. If you want to visually enlarge a small living area, choose lighter rug colors.

8'x10'

8'x10'

An 8'x10' rug is large enough to accommodate most living room seating configurations. To achieve a cozy intimacy,place all legs of your sofa and chairs on the rug, or you may choose to place only the front legs on the rug with the back legs off to create a more open feel.

9'x12'

9'x12'

For larger living rooms, a 9'x12' rug will accommodate most living room furniture. All legs of the sofa and chairs should be placed on a rug this size. If you have even more space, try 10' x 14' or an extra large rug. Oversize rugs make a strong design statement and pull together your decor, creating a dramatic look while still allowing you to create intimate conversation areas.

Looking for a rug to fit beneath a round dining table?. Selecting a round rug is a great look and is a good choice when space is tight. To select the correct round rug size, add three to four feet to each side of your table's measurements. For a fourtop table, a rug that is 6' or 8' round is ideal. Another great design trick is to use a round rug under a square table for a dramatic, geometric effect.

A table for 8 or more chairs looks best on a 9'x12' rug, providing adequate space for all of the chairs to be fully on the rug For a more dramatic look. Select a 10'x14' rug that will cover most of the floor. A good design rule of thumb is to leave at least one foot of flooring exposed around your rug.
