Jute Rug Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Natural and eco-friendly: Jute is a fast-growing plant fiber, and it is fully biodegradable.
  • Warm, neutral look: Its earthy tan tone works with coastal, boho, farmhouse and modern rooms, and it's a great base for layering.
  • Affordable in large sizes: You can cover a big living room or dining room for much less than a wool rug.
  • Strong for everyday traffic: The tight weave holds up well in busy rooms like living rooms and hallways.

Cons

  • Doesn't like water: Spills soak in fast and can leave brown spots, so jute is not for kitchens, bathrooms or open patios.
  • Cats like to scratch it: The rough fiber feels like a scratching post, and claws can pull loops out of braided styles.
  • Sheds a little when new: Short fibers work loose in the first few weeks, then it slows down.
  • Textured, not plush: Jute feels nubby underfoot, so it's not as soft as wool.

Common Jute Rug Problems and Quick Fixes

  • Brown spots after a spill: jute browns as it dries slowly. Dab with equal parts white vinegar and water, then dry fast with a fan.
  • Shedding: normal in the first weeks. Vacuum with suction only. Flatweave jute sheds less than braided.
  • Loose strands: snip them level with scissors. Never pull.
  • Curled edges: roll the rug the other way for a few hours, then weigh the corners down.

Are Jute Rugs Good for Pets?

Not for every pet. Most cats scratch jute like a scratching post, and dog claws can snag the weave.

If you have pets, choose a tight flatweave with no loops, or a washable jute-look rug like the Coty Washable Jutely Rug. Read more about our washable jute rugs.

Braided vs. Flatweave Jute: Which Is Softer?

  • Braided: chunky and cozy. Best for living rooms.
  • Flatweave: smooth and low. Best for dining rooms and homes with pets.
  • Jute and wool blend: the softest. Best for bedrooms. Try the Riki Cream Jute-Wool Blend Rug.

Frequently Asked Questions About Jute Rugs

Do Cats Scratch Jute Rugs?

Yes, most cats do. A tight flatweave holds up better than a braided rug.

Can You Put a Jute Rug Under a Dining Table?

Yes. Choose a flatweave and make sure it extends at least 24 inches past the table on every side.

Can You Use a Jute Rug in the Kitchen?

Not a natural one, because water and grease stain it. Choose a faux jute or washable jute-look rug instead.

Do Jute Rugs Shed Forever?

No. Shedding slows after the first few weeks of regular vacuuming.

Can You Steam Clean a Jute Rug?

No. Heat and moisture can brown and weaken jute fibers.
