Extra Large Rugs: Transform Spacious Rooms with Statement-Making Floor Coverage
When you are furnishing a large living room, open-concept great room, or big master bedroom, standard rug sizes may not work. You need floor coverage that fits your space. It should be big enough to support your furniture arrangement without feeling out of place. Extra large rugs help make big spaces feel complete. They have generous sizes that create a cohesive look.
If you need a large wool rug, an outdoor rug, a modern rug, or a traditional rug, we have many styles for you to choose from.
Large Washable Rugs: Practical Luxury
Our large rug collection includes washable rugs for spacious kitchens or rooms with high foot traffic. They are easy to clean and machine washable rugs which makes them the perfect extra large rug choice for the kitchen.
Washable extra large rugs change this completely. These specially made rugs can be washed in commercial machines at laundromats. This helps you keep your rug fresh and clean, even with pets, kids, and heavy use. When your dog brings mud onto your rug or someone spills red wine at a party, you don’t have to keep the stain. You also don’t need to pay for costly professional help.
The materials used in big washable rugs typically include synthetic fibers like polypropylene or polyester that tolerate repeated washing without shrinking, fading, or deteriorating.

Large Rug Sizes & Shapes
Finding an area rug that is lextra arge is challenging. Since it is oversized, it can be more expensive than small rugs or large rugs. At Boutique Rugs, you can find affordable and cheap extra large rugs in various shape and size options. Here are only some of them,
Materials and Construction
The construction quality of huge area rugs impacts both appearance and longevity. Synthetic materials dominate the oversized rug market for good reasons beyond just washability.
Modern polypropylene and polyester fibers offer impressive durability that holds up to heavy traffic patterns typical in large rooms. These materials do not crush easily in busy areas. They keep their look even after years of use. Plus, they cost much less than natural fibers.
Natural fiber options do exist for those preferring organic materials. Jute, sisal, and wool rugs in extra large dimensions bring textural richness and that natural aesthetic. They work beautifully as neutral foundations that add warmth without overwhelming pattern or color.
Design Considerations for Extra Large Rugs
Neutral oversized rugs offer the most versatility, working as foundations that complement any furniture style or color scheme. Beiges, grays, creams, and soft blues in solid colors or subtle patterns create calm, sophisticated spaces.
Traditional patterns scaled up to huge dimensions bring classic elegance. Persian and Oriental rug designs have been made in large sizes for centuries, and their intricate patterns actually benefit from generous dimensions where the complete medallion and border designs can be fully appreciated.
Contemporary and modern designs take different approaches to large-scale floor coverage. Geometric patterns, abstract designs, or artistic interpretations create visual interest that feels current.
Placement and Styling
The most common mistake is centering the rug in the room rather than centering it on your furniture arrangement. Rooms aren't always perfectly square, and furniture groupings aren't always centered—your rug should anchor your furniture, not the architectural space.
In living rooms, position your big living room rug so it extends 18-24 inches beyond your coffee table on all sides. The sofa should sit with all four legs on the rug or at minimum front legs on it, same with accent chairs. Avoid the awkward half-on, half-off situation where just the very front edge of furniture touches the rug—this looks indecisive.
For bedrooms using large floor carpet to frame the bed, the standard placement puts the rug perpendicular to the bed with roughly two-thirds of the rug under the bed frame. This creates 2-3 feet of rug extending beyond the bed sides and 5-6 feet beyond the foot. Some people prefer positioning the rug horizontally for more side coverage—both approaches work.
